Hospitality industry is growing faster than we ever imagined and has become one of the main employers all over the world. Now, employees are required to have high standards of work because this industry has attained much higher status in the society. Even though there are many employment spaces available in hospitality industry, a lot of people are dying to get the job. Therefore, just like any other industries, interviews are crucial in hospitality to filter the best employees.
You want to be ready to face this reality and fulfill the requirements. Don’t you?
If yes, please share your thought regarding the industry’s expectation of their employees (personal qualities, interpersonal qualities and etc.) and why they are significant.
Thank you for the post, Stephanie ^^
ReplyDeleteIndeed the most important one is the passion of the employees with their jobs. If employees do not have passion in the job they are in, they will not enjoy and do they job the best they can, no effort in doing their jobs.
Responsibility and discipline is also important. People who are working in certain companies need to have a big responsible with the job they have, or else they might slack off or not care about the work too much, just think that they have done the work and that's it, no special attention for the work they need to do. Discipline is the one that influence responsibility too. If a person is lack of discipline, the responsibility within him will not be the same as a person who is discipline. Discipline shows people their passion of their jobs. They will not slack off and of course will abide with the rules. A discipline person will do his job and finish it on time or even before the deadline. He will never make his employer disappointed in him.
Employees also need honesty to their employer and company. If they are honest, their boss will like them and it will give a good impression to the boss. It might give them chance to do certain things that their boss only think that only them that are capable of the task and because their boss think that he can trust them with that job. A trust can bring you many lucks and chances to have promotion and people’s trust. Most of the people, who are honest, usually have bigger responsibility than the others.
Employees in hospitality industry must be hospitable to people around them. Kind, caring, and smiling are the important things when they encounter with the guests or customers. Even if the guests or customers are angry and shouting, we need to calm and speak in a respectful and understanding tone. So, they will be less angry and might not shout again. Being hospitable could make people at ease and become friendlier with us.
Those are some of my thoughts and opinions about the qualifications. I'd like to know the others' thoughts. ^^ Thank you~
Thank you for the topic stephanie. I think this is a good topic to prepare us for the internship.
ReplyDeleteSo based on Bella’s post, we can see that she mention on passion, responsibility, discipline, honesty and the correct attitude. I do agree that that’s the qualification in this industry, so this is my additional opinion on that.
In my opinion, the first important qualification is our passion and interest in this industry. We have seen many of our seniors and even our classmates planning or already moved to other majors. Like what Mr. Lee had said as well in our previous class, this industry attracts people easily in the beginning, but through out the process, they will realize that they do not enjoy it. Also not forgetting that we have a very high employee turnover in this industry, passion is very important. So first I think employers will find out how much is our passion in this industry. Passion comes motivation, and motivation is important.
Basically this industry needs employees who are able to interact with people. So we must be able to have good communication skill, confidence, and also a good attitude. We must be able to interact well with the customers; interaction here is also part of our service. A simple conversation by the guest and a front desk agent about the nearest mall, may lead the guest to judge the hotel service overall. So we need to pay attention on that too.
I think appearance is another important qualification. A good grooming and neat appearance is a good way to present ourselves.
So that’s it for me. ☺
yes, as the hospitaly industry rapidly increasing with the opportunity in this industry, they would have a higher expectation of the employee they are recruiting, such as their experience in the industry or their education in the industry. Having the degree in the industry will open the job opportunity because it is what the industry's expectation. Coming to personal qualities, they expect to find people that are neat and have a good interaction with customers/people and have a good communication skill. This can be improved by having experience from the education, having work and do internship in this industry. For the interview you have to make a good first impression by having a formal clothing having that wow factor before you even talk in the interview. In the interview you have to show that you are good interacting with people and have good communication skills to show that you have that ability to communicate to customers or other people in this industry. Also you have to sell yourself in the interview by telling your experience in the industry(if any) or your education in this industry will impress the interviewee. Telling them your strength industry will also make you achieved their expectations to you in this industry.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the post for Stephanie.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Bella's and Ivana's post, that they mention about the passion, responsibility, and the employees attitude. In my opinion, working in the big industry area, we must have a lot of patient to do our work. But, more important thing that we should know is, how much we do love our job. If we do not have any passion on those job, it is absolutely difficult to do given task. We from our university also give the opportunities to gain the experience to do good job in the real industry. From based on my experience, it is true that, if we do not enjoy the work, more tiredness will place into my body. So basically, we should do the job that we have passion on it.
And I also agree with Mawar's post, guest expectations is higher than what we do expected. The employees should have many experience, skills, good attitude, and great skill of communication with people. These are the most thing that employees should have for facing the big and real industry. Moreover, guest usually like the employees with smile. Smile is one of the key of solution between guest and employees.
Overall, the person should have the responsibility as their task in mind, and welcome the guest with smile.
thank you ^^ (we have to always smile!)
Thank you Stephanie for the topic this week.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we need to have passion to work in this industry otherwise the job that we are doing will not run smoothly. Hospitality industry is not only about serving goods and providing services but also the way and how much willingness we put to serve the guests. In this industry, we are expected to be on time. That's why we are expected not to be late in any occasion so that the operation itself can run well. Also, good grooming is expected as well because it somehow creates good impressions to us and the hotel itself.
In term of interpersonal qualities, certain level of educations and skills are needed based on the department you are hired for. Most of departments require good communication skills and the ability to speak foreign languages. This industry also requires a great ability to solve such problems that may occur at any particular time in the right and effective way.
Well, basically this industry is based on the guests' expectations and for that, we have to find a way to go beyond their expectations to get their satisfactions. That's all that i can say regarding to this topic. Ciao!!
thanks for the topic stephanie.
ReplyDeletewell first impression is all that is need, if you dont dress well when the interview day but infact you are all the hotel needs. its very useless. that is my opinion ofcourse.
all in all, we always have to love our job if we dont love our job it will ruin all the pasion of us to work at that department.
bzz i just mumbling, sorry for grammar mistake.
i'll do better next time, thanks :)
thank you for the topic stef! :)
ReplyDeletelots of comments are already there, so I basically agree with all of those comments, but I do have some opinions to share...
hospitality industry is a large growing industry that absolutely attracts a lot of people to work in the industry.. this condition makes the industry requires the right people to be the part of it, which means only the good ones will get the spot.. then how do we determined the good ones? the basic requirement of every job everywhere is skill.. Sure it might not really that necessary in some several industries, but we can't deny it that in the hospitality we do need skills to be survived..
as we speak of hospitality, the most important skill that we need to have is communication skill, because this industry is basically a service industry, which means that we need to interact with people all the time.. People with good communication skill will be easily go through the industry, and of course, this skill has to come up with confident.. We will have to be confident to have a good communication skill..
beside skills, the thing that will be considered is attitude.. Hospitality industry needs employee with the right attitude, which is hospitable. Of course we all have to agree with this cause the industry can't have people with such a bad temper, right? :)
another idea from me, which hasn't been mentioned in all of those comments above is that we might want to have some special or unique characteristic or ability. Of course this one is not compulsory, but it can help us.. The reason i came up with this is that when we all were in the interview, we were given a question that asked : "what your ability that you think the others don't have?" With this kind of question, clearly they want to know if there is maybe some special and unique talents of ours that can be used as our plus points.. Moreover, the industry will recognize you better if you do have that kind of thing cause it definitely will make you different with the others.. So what I actually mean in this point is : be unique of your own! :)
That is all from me.. Hope this can help us all..
Thank you!
Thank you stephanie for the topic..
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, employee qualification in hospitality industry:
1. Willingness to serve. Why? Because when we talk about hospitality industry, most of the product that we sell is the service itself. We have to serve the costumers from our heart. For example, the front desk checking the guest in, they not only ask something that is required but they ask something that makes the guests feel comfortable. (also needs good communication skill) They also smile to make the guest feel welcome. Imagine if the front desk staff doesn’t have feel from the heart. The atmosphere will be boring and he likes a robot doing the job. The important one is smile from the heart. Show that we respect to them and serve the best you can do to them. Always put in your mind that “the guest is the king.”
2. Knowledgeable. Working in hospitality industry we can not avoid from learning. If we apply for a position in hotel, it means that you know exactly at least what you will do in that position. You have to learn the environment where you are working at. That’s why new employees usually get training program for 3 months to know and train them what they should do in right way. The best example is concierge. The qualification to be the concierge is knowing a lot about the situation the city where the hotel is located. So, they can give information to the guest if the guests want to go to a certain place in that city.
3. Responsibility is one of the important things that the employees should have. I think all the employees in all industry must have responsibility. Responsibility is something that is very “must”. If we don’t have that, everything that we can do can’t give the good result. Everything is in chaos.
The last thing “wear the proper grooming”....

Thank you Stephanie for created the second post..
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, hotel employees should be educated, know about hospitality very well, and has a great personality. In the hospitality industry; trust, knowledge, and attitude are really count. Every employees need to have those criteria. They should be trustworthy, knowledgeable about what happen in the hotel, city, even the world. Attitude is really needed. Every employee should have great attitude. They should be polite, good communication skill, and able to interact with others.
I agree with the previous post regarding the requirements to work in hospitality industry. Hospitality industry has become one of the biggest employers around the world. Employment opportunities are abundant, but still it is not easy to get the job. Like many other industries, hospitality industry seeks and requires a certain personal qualities and interpersonal skills. In my opinion the requirements includes a keen attitude, friendly, neat appearance, willingness to work, confidence, honesty. It is not easy to work in hospitality industry since our job is to provide services for people. We do aware that different people have different needs and wants and it is our job to provide it, this situation can make us feel stressful. Another thing that important is the interpersonal skill. Demand is increasing for people with special skills obtained in colleges, junior colleges, technical institutes, vocational schools, and high schools. In conclusion in order to be accepted in the hospitality industry we have to have both personal skills and interpersonal skills.
ReplyDeletethe growing number of companies in hospitality industry has encourage companies to seek for employees with a higher standards. the competition in the hospitality industry had pushed the quality of each of its participants. this advance of quality requires peoples of better quality. furthermore, an employee is also expected to inhibit skills that may help them compete in the label industry, specifically for the hospitality industry.
ReplyDeleteone of such skill is interpersonal skill. interpersonal skills are skills that a person uses to interact with other people. in my opinion this skill is very important because it relates to communicating with people getting their trust and keeping a good professional relationship with many people.
another important skill is personal skill. personal skills are related to your natural abilities. each people has their own unique capabilities.
